DUNN ASSOCIATES, INC
Consulting Structural Engineers

Dunn Associates

We are a consulting structural engineering firm based in Salt Lake City, Utah with licenses to provide structural design services in over 40 states. Our firm is committed to the goal of technical excellence and minimizing construction cost to our clients. We attain this goal by acting in close liaison with the client, facilitating effective coordination and constantly evaluating cost design concepts. Designs are revised as dictated by the costs of materials and other economic and project factors. Our designs also incorporate the latest technology to reduce overall construction costs while meeting the needs of the client.

Services

Full Service Structural Engineering

We meet, we design, we support, we review, we observe. From idea conception to cutting the ribbon we are your consultant and partner. We employ experienced mentors and take great pride in the success of the team.

Peer Reviews

We will always go to bat for the building no matter the author of the documents. Our candid un-biased set of experienced eyes can assist you in making educated decisions and course corrections.

Value Engineering

Value Engineering is not a stage of design or specific to a single discipline. Sometimes a more expensive structural solution can result in an overall lower total cost. We will ask questions and offer solutions in complementary way all throughout design. We also have extensive experience assisting in this process on projects that did not originate in our office.

Structural Condition Survey

Looking to purchase a property?  We can provide a valuable à la carte menu of levels of review. There are good and bad buildings out there! We will work with you and dovetail a detailed or cursory review that is exactly what you want to receive.

Construction Management

We have a dedicated Construction Management Department that provides an onsite presence on our major projects acting as a liaison between the engineers, the contractor, and the owner.

Professional Opinions

As professionals, we respect our identity and understand our limits. We clearly inform our clients who request our opinions those areas of competence in which we truly are professionals. We will not be everything to everybody. This perhaps makes us even more professional.

Vision

We are built on a very solid foundation. For twenty years we have been patient and deliberate in our growth and client base. We know clearly what our strengths are and how to scale each of them. We are now poised to grow and become the force in the profession that we have envisioned for so many years. We will now spread into surrounding markets both nationally and internationally. We clearly see ourselves as a prominent figure in the industry with highly skilled professionals in each satellite office. This vision drives our desire. This will happen.

Our Timeline

Beginning

We were different by design.

Dunn Associates was born out of desire. Having worked for a large AE firm in San Francisco and a smaller yet very profitable structural consulting firm in the Bay Area, our founder saw both ends of a unique professional spectrum. The process and attitude of professional collaboration was the key.  Dunn Associates was based on the culture of “How can I help?”.  Developing answers to our client’s questions compelled Dunn Associates to be creative. This was the key to our early success. We were different by design.

Today

We continue to Enable Great Design.

We do this by putting the overall success of the project first.  This has expanded our client base from architects to include developers, contractors, insurance and real estate industry, banks and investors.  As we move into the second generation of leadership we are poised to grow, flex with work load, adapt to changing technology, and be somewhat selective of clients we choose to provide our services. We will take our lessons learned and  invest that knowledge to continue to Enable Great Design.

Tomorrow

Our designs will impact the future.

Though the future cannot be clearly imagined, our desire is to continue to enable our clients through great design and to be an influential voice of the many needed changes in our profession.

Our Ideas

We have always believed that our clients pay the bills but our relationships make us rich!  We strive to associate ourselves with those whom we trust.  Trust is the product of a successful relationship.  Our constant goal is to be worthy of our clients’ trust.  Then magic happens!

We have always embraced the idea that one $10/hour employee is worth far more than two $5/hour employees.   We don’t make money off our employees but rather because of them.  We don’t believe in a job by job compensation program.  This stifles creativity and inspires selfishness.  We want to be creative without the temptation of personal gain.  We want the next generation at Dunn Associates to be better than the last.

We believe that architects and engineers should be equally vested.  Technology should enhance our abilities and be beneficial to all our clients.  Sometimes it is needlessly overwhelming and unprofitable.  We want to create a profitable business not a professional practice.

“I can think of no more revitalizing scene than traveling by horseback 10 miles into the High Uintah Mountains, standing in a river with a fishing pole or sitting in the forest on a cool fall morning waiting for a deer or elk to walk past during the bow hunt completely away from all worldly cares. What we do as a profession is hard. With deadlines, unrealistic expectations and last minute changes, I find solace in knowing that there is relief less than 30 minutes away.”

I truly enjoy what I do for work, designing buildings and looking at things in a different way in order to come up with a solution. Other than work, there are many things that I love about life, but the top 3 would have to be family, burritos and BYU sports. I have a big passion for BYU sports and enjoy watching the games. I’ve always been a big supporter of those around me, so it wouldn’t surprise people (too much) to find out that I was a BYU cheerleader. It’s a little known fact about me that has been one of the best things that I’ve done. Not only did I learn the art of team work in a high stakes environment, but without it I would have never met my beautiful fiancé.

For Lori, it’s all about family!

Ron and I are blessed to be the parents of five sons and 5 grandchildren with another on the way! I always knew I would love being a Grandparent, but I was unprepared for the delight of watching my sons as parents.  What a blast! There is nothing better than uninterrupted time with the family, and for us, the best way to achieve that is traveling with them all, which we were lucky enough to accomplish in January when all 15 of us somehow made it to Cancun…and BACK!  We also love our trips to Lake Powell. No phones, no internet – just family.

One of my best memories as a parent was as a non-traditional college student.  I had the amazing opportunity to enjoy my own Hallmark moment when I “walked” as a college graduate with my oldest son, Dave. Though we studied on opposite sides of the campus (sciences versus humanities…the “how do you feel about science” side of the campus) we bumped into each other occasionally and wore our caps and gowns together.

Our Passions

Creativity

Can you believe that we get paid well to come up with cool ideas? Our office environment fosters it, our culture expects it, our recruiters look for it and our clients appreciate it.

Confident

Our services are not for everybody. We charge more because we deliver more. We expect just as much from our clients as they do from us. We love this challenge and want to earn our keep with every project. Never will we take a job or client for granted.

Mobile

Have laptop will travel. Our greatest value is with our clients, whether it be in front of a video conference call or face to face. Nobody incorporates more technology and ways to stay connected with our own team and our clients.

Flexible

We are consultants and as such it is our duty to be responsive to changes in both time and substance. We chose this roll and understand our best path to success is through our clients success.

Personable

We don’t hire nerds! Talk to us about current affairs, sports and politics. We have opinions and will engage in fun and stimulating conversations. Meetings can be long and boring, we don’t care to contribute to the boring part.
