Dickson and Dunn receive their SE

December 18, 2018

After holding their breaths for what seemed like an eternity, Darren and Greg are exhaling a collective sigh of relief (…along with the rest of us). Darren G. Dickson and Gregory S. Dunn received word from the State of Utah that they had passed the 16-hour licensing exam and obtained their S.E. designation.

Darren grew up in construction where he gained over 16 years of construction-related experience such as wood framing and concrete work, as well as handled the majority of the cost estimating. Having this strong construction background has proved to be a successful catalyst into structural engineering and how detailing structures relates to constructability.

Darren completed his undergraduate and graduate work in the civil and environmental engineering program at the University of Utah, emphasizing in structural engineering. He has been with Dunn Associates, Inc. since 2012 and promoted to an Associate in December 2017. He has an impressive resume of award-winning projects like the new Hale Centre Theatre in Sandy, Utah and One Empire Pass in Park City, Utah. His projects currently under design and construction include the Draper Recreation Center, Salt Lake International Airport North Concourse, and Pendry Park City; a modern luxury resort totaling approximately 500,000 square feet.

Tait Ketcham, Principal at Dunn Associates, Inc. who works closely with Darren, says of the accomplishment,

Darren is unquestionably a rising star. He has quickly gained the respect of clients, supervisors and peers with his passion, dedication and knowledge for structural engineering. His construction background drives him to find a balance between calculations and constructability, which has endeared him to contractors.  I am certain that Darren will be a leader well into the future.

Structural Engineering has been a part of Greg’s family dialogue his entire life. When asked what this accomplishment meant to him, he smiled and answered, “This has been a lifelong dream. I’ve known I wanted to do this from a very young age.”

Greg graduated with a Master’s of Science in Civil & Environmental Engineering from the University of Utah, emphasizing in structural engineering, then joined Dunn Associates, Inc. in 2011. He was promoted to an Associate in 2017 and has spent a large portion of his career focused in the tilt-up world where he is continuously exploring the next innovation in tilt design.

He has well over two-million square feet of concrete tilt-up on his resume with projects at Business Depot Ogden (BDO) and the UPS Distribution Facility in Salt Lake City, Utah.  His sights are currently set on tackling a multi-story tilt-up project in the Salt Lake area totaling half a million square-feet, and that’s not all! Greg’s experience extends beyond concrete tilt with projects like Xactware Corporate Office and Ancestry Corporate Office at Traverse Mountain in Lehi, Utah. He is currently working on the new Malouf Headquarters in Logan, Utah.

Justin Jacobs, Principal Architect at GSBS Architects, reacted to the news.

It has been my sincere pleasure to have worked with Greg on a number of recent projects. He has consistently brought creative solutions to every design challenge we have thrown at him while making every effort to understand and uphold the intent behind those designs. Congratulations to Greg – I look forward to many more opportunities to work together in the future.
